Which projects to DIY...

& which projects to leave for the Pros..

I loved researching for this blog edition because I, like most homeowners consider myself pretty handy and love to save a bit of money when I can. On the flip side I hope that I know my limits for DIY projects! And, there are definitely some Do It Yourself projects that are best left to the professionals. Here are some things to consider when you’re doing projects around your home…

First, check your city rules to make sure you do not need a permit for whatever work you’re doing. A quick call or check on the county building department website will get you started off on the right foot. And if you live in an HOA, be sure to check your CC&R’s too!

Second, determine how much the project is going to cost to see if it fits in with your budget. I can’t even tell you how many clients (me included) I’ve seen start a DIY project only to find that it was a lot more expensive than they thought!

Third, determine the scope of work involved. Your favorite HGTV personalities make DIY projects look pretty simple, sadly it doesn’t mean they actually are.  Even in my planning phase of a project, it can seem like it will be a straightforward.  Plus, I try to err on the positive side, but once you open walls or expose electrical, plumbing, etc. there can be some surprises along the way. Know when to call in the big guns, it will end up saving you money and headaches in the long run.

Finally, here’s a list of projects to DIY (and outsource) …

3 DIY-Friendly Projects

  • Painting- Interior, Exterior or wall murals and everything in between, have fun.
  • Landscaping- This can be a fun one to learn, plus you can get outside and soak in the Vitamin D!
  • Hardware- Cabinet pulls, door handles, bathroom accessories and more, this can be a great update.

3 Projects to Outsource

(Depending on your skill level)

  • Plumbing- We all know water can cause a lot of damage when it is not flowing where we want it too. Leaks can be small, slow, and quiet and before you know it there are some expensive repairs that need to be made.
  • Electrical-This one can get a little sparky! It can seem simple enough to change out a light or switch here and there. but with the influx of so many distinct types of lighting, the question could arise as to whether or not your homes current electrical is equipped to handle new or added fixtures.
  • Roofing- Roof falls can be very dangerous, better to have someone with the equipment to remain safe be up that high off the ground.
  • Structural- If it hold up your roof it may be wise to have a professional look at it.
