Gig Harbor

For a different perspective of Puget Sound, take a trip to Gig Harbor and explore the historic waterfront. The area was settled by Scandinavian and Croatian immigrants who brought new businesses to the region.

The city boasts nearly two dozen parks, including the popular Skansie Brothers Park located in the heart of downtown, named after the fishermen brothers who lived and worked there.

But the real highlight of Gig Harbor is its water activities. You can charter a boat for a unique tour of the waterways, or rent a kayak and explore on your own!

Travel Time: 50 minutes by car

Leavenworth

If you’re in Seattle, a trip to Mount Rainier National Park is a must. This mountain is home to several glaciers and offers stunning views, which makes it a popular spot for hiking and climbing. Additionally, the park is filled with diverse wildflowers that bloom from mid-July through most of August, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts. During winter, road closures in the park are common, but visitors can still enjoy winter camping and sledding if the park is accessible.

Travel Time: 2 hours and 15 minutes by car

Mount Rainier National Park

A Bavarian-Inspired Getaway: Dreaming of a European adventure but international travel is not possible? Head to Leavenworth instead! This charming city has transformed its downtown into an enchanting Bavarian village, complete with year-round festivals.

Sip on regional beverages and sample delectable cuisine during Oktoberfest or take in a summer production by the Leavenworth Summer Theater. But don’t miss out on winter activities, which draw the largest crowds. Leavenworth is also an ideal starting point for skiing in the area. Regardless of the season, Leavenworth is a must-visit destination.

San Juan Islands

A Ferry-Free Day Trip from Seattle; If you’re searching for a unique day trip from Seattle, why not try the San Juan Islands? Although you’ll need to drive outside of the city to reach your destination, it’ll be worth it. The temperate weather on the islands attracts visitors year-round, with whale watching being a popular activity. Moreover, the islands also offer opportunities for kayaking and other boating activities. You’ll find a range of restaurants and shopping opportunities across the communities, with many locally made artisan goods available. Don’t forget to save time for wine tasting at one of the established vineyards on the islands!

Skagit Valley

Skagit Valley is the perfect starting point for a Seattle-area adventure, offering a wealth of attractions to discover. Visitors can indulge in delicious local cuisine, explore natural areas, and learn about the region’s rich history in museums. The most popular time to visit is during spring, when the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is in full bloom. Take a scenic drive through the valley to marvel at the vibrant colors of the tulip fields. Skagit Valley is also known for its farm-to-table food, sourced from local farms that grow an abundance of tulips – more than any other area in the United States.

Snoqualmie Falls

Snoqualmie Falls, located in Washington, is the second-most visited natural landmark in the state after Mount Rainier. The waterfall boasts a 268-foot plunge, offering several vantage points to enjoy the spectacular view by observation walk or hiking trail. The falls are part of a community of the same name that houses museums to learn about the area’s history and both on site and in the nearby town. Downtown Snoqualmie is only a mile walk from the falls, making it an easy excursion for visitors. Moreover, Snoqualmie Falls holds significant cultural importance for the Snoqualmie people, who are indigenous to the area. The tribe recently purchased land near the falls and is actively working to preserve the land for future generations.

What to Wear and Pack for Your Seattle Day Trips

When planning day trips from Seattle, it’s important to dress or pack accordingly, especially since some locations are closer to the coast or higher in elevation. Dressing in layers is key to being prepared for any weather conditions, even during the summer months when it’s less likely to be cold or rainy.

The climate in Seattle can vary, so be sure to check the weather report before heading out and always wear your sunscreen! Even though the sky might be overcast, it’s still possible to get sunburned in the often-cloudy Pacific Northwest. Like my mom always said “Layers, Layers, Layers when in the PNW”

The Answer is.......McNeil Island — Washington’s last island prison, active from 1875 to 2011.

Before it closed, the prison dumped everyday glass and waste along its shores—everything from bottles to windows. 🌊 Over the decades, tides tumbled that glass into colorful gems that still show up on nearby beaches, especially near Steilacoom and Anderson Island.

It’s not your typical beach day… but it is one of the Puget Sound’s most hauntingly beautiful bits of local lore. 💎 follow for more of favorite trivia and PNW Bests

This Charming Waterfront Town Has Some Serious PNW History 🌲
Back in the early 1900s, this town was home to one of the largest lumber mills in the country—and nearly everything revolved around it. Streets were laid out in neat rows and named after trees (hello, Maple, Alder, and Birch), and the mill even provided housing, a general store, and a dance hall for workers.Today, it’s a peaceful little town with a beautiful waterfront, a marina, and a summer farmers market that’s perfect for a Saturday stroll. Locals love the history, the friendly feel, and the views across the Sound.

If you guessed Port Gamble, you nailed it! 🪵
